The Immersive Theatre of Learning
Immersive Theatre of Learning
Online Cohort

Session 1
The Dream Framework
DREAM is the central framework in the book and can be used as a tool to design or enhance learning experiences in order to make them immersive.
DRAMA: designing the story and dramatic structure of the experience, its beginning, peaks and ending.
RELATIONSHIP: building rapport and connection with the learning enabler and the other learners, but also making links with existing knowledge and skills.
EMOTIONS: ensuring emotional availability, engagement and the creation of durable memories.
ACTION: creating opportunities for learners to actively experiment and embody.
MEANING: adding a personal value to the purpose of the experience.

Dates:
Sat 29 March 2025 10am-1pm CET
Thu 17 April 2025 5pm-8pm CET
Mon 18 August 2025 3pm-6pm CEST

Session 2
The Learner's DNA
Most learning professionals take into account the needs of their learners.
But needs are only one important element in what we call the learner's DNA.

D stands for DESIRES: what learners really want.
N stands for NEEDS.
And A stands for ASPIRATIONS: what is the transformation learners want to see in their lives.

In this session we will also cover the fields of psychological and emotional needs, as well as fixed versus growth mindsets.

Dates:
Sat 5 April 2025 10am-1pm CET
Tue 22 April 5pm-8pm CET
Tue 19 August 2025 10am-1pm CEST

Session 3
Learning Ensembles
In music or improv theatre, the French term ENSEMBLE is used to describe a group of performers.
In the Theatre of Learning, an ENSEMBLE is a group of learners who learn as much or more from one another as from the facilitator or teacher.
They also complement and support each other and collaborate to achieve learning outcomes.

How can facilitators create such ensembles?
How can they turn a group of strangers into a group of learning allies?
How can they handle and reconcile underlying conflicts or power relations and make sure each voice is heard?
How can learning be personalised, even in a group setting?

Dates:
Sat 19 April 2025 10am-1pm CET
Thu 8 May 5pm-8pm CEST
Tue 19 August 2025 3pm-6pm CEST

Session 4
The Learning Zone
The Hungarian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi called it FLOW.
The American neuro-economist Paul ZAK calls it IMMERSION.
It's the magical zone between not knowing and knowing, between doubt, curiosity and confidence, between improvisation, rehearsal and mastery.

In this session will build the psychological stage for durable and transformative learning to take place.

Dates:
Sat 3 May 2025 10am-1pm CET
Thu 15 May 2025 5pm-8pm CEST
Wed 20 August 2025 10am-1pm CEST

Session 5
Learnscaping
How to design or enhance spaces where learning takes place?
When class and training rooms become stages in the Immersive Theatre of Learning, what stage design and props do you need?
What are the environments that foster learning?
How can you create immersion with or without a budget?

Dates:
Mon 19 May 2025 5pm-8pm CEST
Sat 31 May 2025 10am-1pm CEST
Wed 20 August 2025 3pm-6pm CEST

Session 6
Playful Learning
Learning Games and Gamification are not only powerful elements in any form of learning.
They allow learners to experiment and take risks in a safe, but playful setting.
How to build learning games and playful learning activities from scratch?
How to choose the game mechanic that work?
How to measure learning outcomes?

Dates:
Sat 7 June 2025 10am-1pm CET
Fri 30 May 2025 4pm-7pm CEST
Thu 21 August 2025 10am-1pm CEST

Session 7
Learning Circles and Learning Rituals
Unlike most traditional programmes and syllabi, learning is not linear. It is circular, like a spiral or the ripples in the water.
How can we design circular learning journeys that allow learners to revisit what they have learned without making the ride repetitive and tedious.

One solution is the creation of Learning Habits and Rituals. Habits automate us and help memorise things. Rituals animate us and create long-lasting memories.

Dates
Sat 28 June 2025 10am-1pm CET
Tue 3 June 2025 5pm-8pm CEST
Thu 21 August 2025 3pm-6pm CEST

Session 8
Rehearsals for Life
In this final session it is time to bring all the elements of immersive learning design together and create a true Rehearsal for Life.

Challenge your own learning design with valuable feedback from other members of the cohort and the guide.
